Smooth Indian Sandstone Paving Features:

  • Captivating colours and natural variation enhance the appearance of gardens and patios.
  • The sawn and roughly honed finish creates a smooth and contemporary look with straight edges.
  • Honed smooth Indian sandstone paving highlights the prominent patterns and colours of natural paving stones. It offers a certain level of slip resistance, although this is generally lower than split riven sandstone.
  • Smooth Indian sandstone paving is available in a wide range of colours, from neutral tones to more vibrant options.
  • Its consistent thickness makes installation easier compared with uncalibrated paving slabs.

How to Obtain Smooth Indian Sandstone Paving

  • Initial Cutting: Place the Indian sandstone block on the bed of the saw machine and cut it into slabs of roughly uniform thickness.
  • Rough Grinding: Roughly grind the top surface of each slab to create a smoother surface. The bottom surface remains the normal sawn surface.
  • Slab Selection: Remove particularly thin slabs and use a calibrated machine to reduce particularly thick slabs to a more uniform thickness, typically with a grooved underside.
  • Precision Cutting: Use an infrared saw machine to cut the processed slabs of nominally uniform thickness into the required specifications.
  • Packaging and Inspection: During packaging, approximately 5 to 10 percent of the bottom surfaces may still be grooved, while around 90 to 95 percent of the bottom surfaces will be sawn.

⚠️ Paving Slabs UK Expert Advice:

Sandstone is naturally porous, and water staining effects are more noticeable when the stone is in a honed smooth finish. To help reduce this risk, we advise sealing the undersides of all sawn sandstone paving with SBR adhesive before installation. This should be applied evenly and allowed to dry fully in order to create a chemical barrier between the cement mixture and the natural paving stone. In addition, apply Lithofin Stain Stop W sealer to the top and sides to help prevent staining.

Due to the relatively low density of sandstone, the sawn edges of sawn and honed smooth sandstone tend to be sharp, unlike hand-chiselled edges. Chipping can occur and no stone company can completely avoid this. If customers are particularly concerned about chipping, we recommend avoiding smooth sandstone with sawn edges. Alternatively, with the owner's agreement, customers may visit a local yard or store and pay an additional fee to handpick the stones. In such cases, the cost is typically around twice the standard price.

The images shown are representative of a particular batch of smooth sandstone paving slabs and one style of installation, intended to demonstrate the general overall effect. Variations in appearance may arise due to differences in natural stone batches, installation methods, sealing, or the type of protective sealant applied. No seller of natural stone paving slabs can guarantee that every final result will match the images exactly.

If a customer has concerns about the final appearance, it is advisable to search Google using relevant keywords and review images from a range of suppliers to gain a broader understanding of the possible appearance of smooth sandstone before making a purchase.

Customers should clearly understand that the natural stone purchased is intended for paving and will inevitably be walked on over time. It is not a countertop, decorative ornament, or furniture item, so there is no need to be overly concerned about minor chips, as such imperfections are a natural part of long-term use.

Eliminating these minor imperfections from mass-produced, paving-grade natural stone would result in significantly higher production costs. As an online store committed to offering competitive prices, we are unable to meet excessively high aesthetic or quality expectations beyond normal paving standards.

Polished smooth sandstone may occasionally display minor surface imperfections, such as colour variation, cloudy patches, veining, or sparkle dots, which may be visible upon close inspection. However, these are generally considered acceptable and do not affect the overall appearance once the paving has been installed. We kindly ask customers to understand and accept these natural characteristics before purchasing. If you are not comfortable with slight surface imperfections, please consider your purchase carefully. We do not accept claims relating to such natural characteristics.

During the Indian sandstone cutting process, slight variations in thickness may occur due to factors such as blade vibration. Minor deviations, including occasional slightly thinner pieces, are generally regarded as acceptable within industry standards and should not affect normal use. However, if a substantial number of noticeably thinner slabs are reported, we are willing to review the matter and may offer a reasonable form of compensation where appropriate. Please note that slightly thicker slabs are considered within acceptable manufacturing standards and will not be eligible for claims.

How to Handle Chipping Issues of Smooth Indian Sandstone:

When laying the paving, there is no need to worry excessively about whether the slabs show some chipping. After completing the paving project and filling the joints with Joint It Simple, any minor chipping can then be addressed.

Take any used or discarded slabs and crush them into a fine powder with a hammer. Mix this powder with stone adhesive to create a paste. This paste can then be used to fill chipped edges and restore their original shape. This method allows builders to repair chipping effectively and also enables homeowners to carry out similar repairs in future if chipping occurs during use.
